The 2008 Grape Harvest

Copious spring rains

In 2008 there was a very rainy spring, which slightly delayed sprouting but was important to make up for the drought of 2007, especially in soils with a higher lime-clay content. However continuous drizzle accompanied by quite high temperatures in June and July led to problems with the common vine diseases, first Perenospera and then powdery mildew. We had much more problems with disease than in 2007 and, since we farm organically, it wasn’t always possible to keep it under control. Where we were able to contain the fungal infections the quantity and quality of our grapes was excellent. When things got out of control (particularly in some north/north-westerly exposed Sangiovese vineyards) we suffered an estimated loss of about 30%, largely of the sangiovese variety. Nevertheless, 2008 wines are deep and very expressive. They conserve great flavours and, thanks to a good acidity, have plenty of fruity freshness.
