The 2012 Grape Harvest

A rather cold climate

The early months of 2012 were rather cold and were marked by significant snowfall in February, something somewhat unusual for the Pisan hills. Bud burst was nonetheless regular, and a warm spring led to good flowering and fruit-set. However there was a drought in the summer which caused stress and losses of up to 20% in younger vineyards.

Despite this, the quality, especially of the sangiovese, was exceptional. Having the sea nearby and the location in the hills helps mitigate the heat and allows the fruit to maintain intense aromas.
