The 2022 Grape Harvest

A complicated year

2022 was a complicated year, there was almost no rain in the winter and the vines budded ten days later than recent years; but then they grew vigorously, thanks to the high temperatures that we had from May onwards. Spring was also quite dry which helped us to avoid fungal infections.

There was a major drought in the summer, but here in Ghizzano it rained on the 17th, and then the 19th and the 21st  of August, which was just the right time for the sangiovese and cabernet sauvignon varieties. The re-start of the ripening of the grapes was accelerated and they were ready for harvest a few years earlier than last year. This meant that at the beginning of September the harvest of our early ripening white vermentino grapes was almost finished and we started picking the early ripening varieties of red grapes such as merlot.

It was a wonderful year for the sangiovese which benefitted from hot September days to help finish ripening, as did the cabernet sauvignon and petit verdot.

In 2022 the vineyards of Ghizzano were full of healthy grapes, with higher sugar levels than usual compared to recent years, and acidity similar to other years.
